Surescripts has identified different levels of failure for NCPDP-based messages:

- In instances where Surescripts receives a message that is unrecognizable, Surescripts sends back an HTTP error.
- If an error occurs after the sender has been identified and validated and the message has been determined to be an NCPDP message, Surescripts returns an NCPDP Error message to the sender.
- If the recipient identifies an error, the recipient creates an NCPDP Error message and returns it through Surescripts to the sender.
