# Prior Authorization Status Best Practices

The status of a prior authorization can be communicated between prescribers and pharmacies through particular standard e-Prescribing messages or through the PANotification transaction. Timely communication of prior authorization status can reduce the need for prescriber and pharmacy communication outside of the electronic workflow.

- In the NewRx message, the status of a requested or received prior authorization can be communicated by the provider in the Medication Prescribed | PriorAuthorizationStatus element.
- For RxChange messages, the pharmacy can use the MessageRequestCode of P – Prior Authorization to indicate a prior authorization is required for the medication. The prescriber can respond using the MedicationPrescribed | PriorAuthorizationStatus element in the RxChange response to communicate the status of the prior authorization.
- For an RxRenewal request, the pharmacy may use the MessageRequestCode element in the RxRenewalRequest to notify the prescriber a prior authorization is required. Prescribers can then use the MedicationResponse | PriorAuthorizationStatus element to communicate the status of the prior authorization in the RxRenewalResponse.
- The PANotification transaction can be sent by either the prescriber or the pharmacy to communication that they have requested a prior authorization or they have received a prior authorization decision.
