the surescripts health information network interconnect supports the ability to communicate with requesting locations using structured fhir® messages message description(s) patient search request/response the fhir patient match request is used for patient search document search request/response the document search request/response uses the fhir documentreference resource to request retrieval of the list of available patient documents from responding locations document retrieve request/response the document retrieve request uses document retrieve to obtain documents from responding locations fhir requestor workflow the below workflows outline the process that requesting locations will use to identify and retrieve patient documents patient search requests this workflow is used to search surescripts health information network interconnect to see if a patient matching the provided demographics is known a the requesting location’s fhir system sends a fhir patient search request to surescripts health information network using the patient match search operation b interconnect searches participant loaded interconnect mpis for patient matches c interconnect sends patient search requests to surescripts health information network participants and other qhins d other qhins respond to surescripts health information network patient search requests e interconnect processes all responses from all sources and combines them into a single patient search response f surescripts health information network replies via fhir patient search response with a surescripts health information network interconnect patient id and demographics representing the requested patient this surescripts health information network interconnect assigned patient id will be used in the document search to find available documents from all responding locations document search requests this workflow is used to search for documents available for the identified patient and retrieve the identification information and metadata for each document a the requesting location’s fhir system sends a fhir document search request that includes the surescripts health information network interconnect patient id to obtain the document reference list b interconnect sends a document search request(s) to other surescripts health information network participants and other qhins that identified as having a patient match c surescripts health information network receives document search response(s) with the document lists from other qhins d interconnect combines all document search response(s) providing a url for each document's possible retrieval e surescripts health information network sends all available document ids in a fhir document search response along with metadata including the urls that can be used to retrieve each available document document retrieve requests the purpose of this workflow is to retrieve the identified patient documents a using a document retrieve request, the requesting location's fhir system requests a document from surescripts health information network participants or other qhins using the url from the document search response b interconnect relays that request and requests that the externally originated document associated with the url would be sent to surescripts health information network as a streamed document c surescripts health information network participants or other qhins streams with the requested document to surescripts health information network d interconnect will honor the contents of the document retrieve request’s accept header and will return the requested document either via a bundle in a fhir response or by streaming the document directly to the fhir requestor note surescripts health information network limits the lookback period for retrieving documents to 3 days from the last document search request because of this, surescripts health information network’ recommended best practice is to send related patient search requests, document search requests, and document retrieve requests sequentially within 3 days of each other
